About Jeff Covert

The song begins by saying happiness is Lubbock Texas in the rear view mirror. While growing up in Lubbock, I always looked forward to our trips with family, the school and with friends. I found that I loved visiting new places, doing cool things and meeting new people. Life remains a journey filled with many adventures. My career as a Marine was definitely a globetrotting adventurous whirlwind of new places, activities and people. I traveled to over 30 countries and over half of these United States. I am Commandant of the Georgia Devil Dog Detachment #952 of the Marine Corps League. I have been a recruiter, a deputy sheriff, a police officer and a programs manager. I earned my bachelor’s IT and my MBA in project management. Now? I am still a programs manager and I enjoy cruise ship vacations! Let’s go cruising! As I said before, I love going to new places and meeting new people. Our new adventure is organizing cruises aboard the best ships to the most popular destinations. As always, I threw myself into this new hobby and quickly became a certified cruise consultant. We have organized cruises to all parts of the Caribbean and Alaska! Adding more countries to our list of adventures and meeting hundreds of new friends continues to be a blast! The song ends celebrating the joy of coming home to rest and relax from the latest adventures. My wife and I live in Suwanee, Georgia. We have four dogs, an American HotRod, a Harley and some more toys at Lake Lanier. We will not go quietly into that “golden age”! I enjoy making new connections with cruise ship vacation enthusiasts. Reach out and I will let you know how we can help you enjoy yourself more!

Marines and Friends Veterans Cruise 2023 is a GO!!

Every year in November America celebrates Veterans Day on 11/11, and there also world wide celebrations honoring the birth of the United States Marine Corps, born 10 November 1775.

Of the hundreds of celebrations of the Marines, two stand out as “Must Attend” events.

Each year a small group of about a hundred will muster at the Hammerheads Seafood and Grille in Suwanee, Georgia on 10 November. It does not matter what day of the week 10 November falls on, a faithful band of Marines, will put on their Marine Corps branded clothing, and along with their significant others meet at for a a meal, and participate in the Marine Corps Birthday Ceremony. The Marines will muster, share stories and catch up with friends they may only see once a year. The ceremony will honor all veterans, of all services, and remember those who have gone on to guard heaven’s gate.

An even smaller group that numbers in the dozen’s will take the celebration a fun bit farther. Just prior to 10 November finds this smaller band of brothers boarding a cruiseship on 28 October thru 4 November 2023 and sailing the Caribbean Sea for a week of extended camaraderie, adventure and relaxation Marine Corps style. In other words, they wear themselves out well into every evening and wake early to explore the port of the day.

During the cruise, each day brings something different because aside from the ships daily schedule of events, the band of Marines bring with them their own schedule of activities. Each year, there is a red, white and blue day, a sparkles day, and a unique theme day that varies from year to year. Since we will be at sea on Halloween, we will bring our ghouls, goblin, witch and vampire attire. Of course one night is set aside to conduct the Marine Corps Birthday Traditional Cake Cutting Ceremony.

The red, white and blue day is exactly what it sounds like, no matter where we are during the day, the entire group is in red, white, and blue. If by the pool, the bathing suit is red, white and blue, if you are exploring a port in search of rum, trinkets, or other souvenirs, your casual clothing is RW&B. At dinner time, yup, RW&B.

Sparkles night is dedicated to the shiny sequined wardrobe for both men and women. I am trying to convince the wife that it is okay to wear an outfit more than once, especially if it is only going to be worn once a year. I have not had success. But at least I get to wear the same shiny vest each year, I just change which shirt I wore from last year!

The unique theme night does change from year to year, and we have yet to repeat a theme. We have enjoyed Pirate night where we all dressed up as pirates, Wild West Night, roaring 20’s, the 50’s, and last year was aloha.

The best part of the cruise is not what we do, or where we go. The best part of the cruise is who we go with, and who we met along the way. Each year, the group finds one particular area of the ship that becomes the daily hangout. The one place no matter the time of the day, we are assured to find other members of the group and use the opportunity to catch up on the day, week, or year.

Living near a large lake in Georgia, we stop enjoying the water around September, the cruise provides the perfect pause from the wintry cold.

The hosts for the cruise are Marine veterans and our wives. Jeff and Ginny Covert, together with Tony and Nancy Tijerina can answer as many questions you may have.

Yes, Yes!! A Cruise Vacation Is Still A Great Value!!

Myth – A cruise vacation is too expensive.  Not at all.

While not cheap,  a cruise vacation is still a very efficient use of vacation funds.  The cruise industry continues to compete for the ever growing market.  The market is growing because more and more people can afford cruises.

A look at the Value

Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, so, value is only relevant to each individual based their preferences and what they are looking for in a vacation.    A cruise vacation offers value in the broadest scale by the features of the vacation that are included in the fare.    To see how far your vacation dollars can go, this post will first illustrate the bare bones vacation for two, joining a group cruise.

The Cost of a Cruise Vacation

Base Fare – Taxes and Port Fees – Gratuities – Insurance – Transportation to Port – Excursions at Ports Visited – Additional Options At Sea

Base Fares

Every cruise vacation will include the base fare, that is the price advertised for a specific cruise, and the cabin category being advertised.   Often referred to as the lead in price, it routinely is offered on a per-person fare based on double occupancy.  The base fare is a great tool when shopping for cruises and narrowing down the cruise line, ship, dates and itineraries that appeal to the shopper the most.   As you can see above, the base fare is only part of the eventual total cost of a cruise.  Use the base fare to compare.

Taxes and Port Fees and Gratuities

Each cruise, based on length, cost and the number of ports being visited will have an additional line item in the cost of the cruise for each person booked that reflects the taxes and port fees.   Additionally, each person is charged a set daily amount in mandatory gratuities that can be paid prior to sailing or paid while aboard the ship.  The gratuities are for the food and beverage servers, porters and housekeeping staff.  Gratuities are 11-14 dollars a day per person.

Travel Protection/Insurance

When booking, the decision to purchase travel protection directly from the cruise line, through a third party or you own travel club will be made.  As a consumer, I always purchase some form of insurance, and a group cruise planner, I highly encourage the same to all my clients.   I use a third party vendor that includes free coverage of pre-existing health concerns if coverage is purchased within a week of booking a cruise.  Look for a blog post on insurance coming soon.

Additional Costs

Beyond the cost to board the ship and enjoy all the complimentary features included in your booking, there are other expenses that you may or may not decide to enjoy.

The complimentary features include dinning, comedy shows, musical performances, nightclubs, lectures, pool side  deck parties, themed nights, sports venues, the gym, group fitness events led by professional trainers, etc, etc.  The list of activities that are included are more enough to enjoy a very nice cruise.    So how else could you spend additional monies on your cruise?

Two significant forms of additional expenses are alcohol and shore excursions.   Alcohol is not included.    There are beverage packages that can be purchased that allow you to control how much you will spend.  Lately, cruise lines not only offer the various beverage packages, some are including a “free” adult beverage package as a booking incentive, I say free because the free beverage package comes with additional gratuities near 100 per person, for me and my wife, 100 per person to drink for a week while on vacation is an absolute bargain, no brainer.     Shore excursions are expensive, as with insurance, you may select excursions through the cruise line or you may go with a third party shore excursion, we do both.     The best way to avoid shore excursions is to be your own travel guide, google the ports you are going to visit, we have often found things to do in port that allow us to enjoy the port visit.   We have often been successful finding nearyby hotels that have beach passes tailored to those of us on a port visit.

Transportation To The Port

If possible, choose a cruise close to home.   If you are able to drive the day of embarkation, and park at a discount parking venue that provides a shuttle to and from the ship, then that will be the least expensive.   It does add significant costs when, because of distance you need to fly to the port the day before the cruise and spend an evening in a local hotel.  We have done both, and it adds several hundred dollars per person depending on airfare and hotel costs.

Still a Value?

Without a doubt, when first time cruisers ask me for a quote for our group cruise, I always know the number for booking various cabin categories for particular cruise.    They are always surprised to hear they can join our 7 day cruise, with the adult beverage package for less than 800 dollars a person.   That is two people in an inside cabin and includes the base fare, the taxes, and gratuities.  If we convince them to purchase travel insurance, it add less than 100 dollars.   So yes, a one week vacation aboard a ship full of features, visiting 3-5 ports during the vacation, all for less than 1000 per person is a heck of a deal.   I can think of no other vacation where you can eat and drink all you want, enjoy poolside activities all day, attend comedy and musicals in the evening, then party to wee hours of the night at various night clubs.    You are only a first time cruiser once, then you are a returning cruise enthusiast, learning more and more ways to extend your vacation dollars.

I am always happy to help, let me know your questions and I will answer them in future blogs.

Why Cruise As A Group?

Group Cruises are fun, and save vacation funds!

There are more and more savvy consumers choosing the value of a cruise vacation as more ships enter the market every year.   One great way to add value is to cruise as group, most cruise lines consider a group of eight cabins or more as a group.

sail away whoo hoo

How hard can it be?

It is easy to set up a group cruise, the smart choice is to use a group travel consultant, we work with a majority of cruise lines and will assist in the group booking process.

Best Advantage of Small Groups of 8-16 Cabins is that there are no upfront costs, which simplifies the process with zero monetary risks.    One group cruise we do each year is the Marines and Friends Cruise, we create the group with 16 cabins which locks in our group pricing, very similar to making a hotel reservation.   As guests join our group, they select their cabin category, location and pay their deposits individually.

There are also no penalties for failing to book all 16 cabins that are blocked, for example, groups that only book 6 or 7 cabins, after a published deadline, all cabins not sold are removed from the block, and returned to the cruise line to book to the public.   Inversely, all cabins booked beyond the 16 cabins are still allowed to be moved into the group and will enjoy the same amenities as the first 16  cabins.

Group Amenities are small incentives that are offered to the group organizer to select for the group.   The amenities available are based on how many cabins are booked into your group.   These amenities include additional on-board credit for each cabin, cocktail social for the group, special group dining events, and other amenities that vary from cruise line to cruise line.  We almost always select the additional on-board credit.

When blocking more than 16 Cabins, the cruise lines will require deposits on all cabins reserved by a certain date.

So, the next time you are considering a cruises, think about inviting friends and family.  Family or class reunions, wedding parties, your local sports team or fan club, or even an office get away for 5-7 days!

I’d love to help!

I have been a group cruise consultant for over five years, I would be happy to assist you when planning your next cruise.    www.jeffcovert.cruiseshipcenters.com

What to Pack For Your Cruise

What Not To Forget!

We all pack in our certain way, and on our own particular schedule, I know a certain lady who begins about 100 days before her cruises, and there of those who wait till it is time to leave the house.

I suggest everyone complete the on-line check in, and print out your boarding documents.  They are a nice reminder to grab your passport and the itinerary might help you decide what you need to pack.

So please, don’t forget your passport and boarding documents.  I only mention this because, well, it happens.

Neat Tips

Ladies might want to take something comfortable to wear when inside the cabin for all the visits from the cabin stewards and room service. Oh, and take a scarf, works great for windy evenings, bad hair days, and a cover if you get a chill out late.

Men, you may want to take a least one sport coat that can be worn over any sharp tee shirt, polo or button up shit.

Some Travel Essentials

Travel Documents mentioned above also include airline tickets, medical insurance cards, emergency numbers, etc.

Medications and/or small kit for headache, sea-sickness, upset tummy and the rest of your digestive system.

Reading Materials and reading glasses

A complete list that borders on insulting your intelligence can be found HERE

Group Cruise? Easier than you think!!

How many must we have to plan a group cruise?

As a cruise consultant, I am often surprised that clients don’t take advantage of the option to plan a cruise as a group.   It turns out, that once presented with the group option, the decision to proceed as a group is an easy decision to make.

sail away whoo hoo

Actually, smaller groups with as little as eight cabins are the easiest.   Our annual cruise for military veterans and family and friends always start out as a group planned for eight cabins, and always grows to significantly larger groups.

The advantage to our small group planning strategy is that no monies are required for a deposit.   Deposits are only required as individuals book into the group, and they are paid by the individuals at that time.   As the group leader, one does not have to risk financially if the group does not meet the eight cabins reserved for the cruise.  If you need more cabins, your additional guests are added to the group as they join the cruise.

Also, if you do organize a group cruise, and your group does not book the planned eight cabins, in most cases, the guest who did join the cruise still enjoy the on board credit the group was assigned.

Is it really that easy?

Yes, if you have been  considering a cruise for a family or school reunion, or with your local tennis association you should contact a certified cruise consultant and ask for more information.   Face to face consultations are best, but I have done them on the phone and with video conferences.    The hardest part is choosing, as a group, where and when you will be enjoying your group cruise.

How do you choose the actual cruise?

Not everyone will agree, some have a preferred cruise line, and everyone has different life schedules.  It is best to have one group leader working with your cruise consultant, and the group leader will canvas the group with all the options provided.   Once the group has decided on the actual itinerary and the group has been established for booking.   The group leader will provide booking information to the group.    The guests will be able to contact the group leader individually.

Why Use A Cruise Planner?

cocktails at sea

The use of cruise planners to ensure an awesome vacation is growing more popular as savvy cruise enthusiast realize they save money, and learn much more about their vacation options when they use an expert.

Why are families turning back to using the concierge service offered by certified cruise consultants like me?

They are learning:

Cruise consultants work for you and are paid by the cruise line at no additional cost to the client.   By paying the consultant a commission, the cruise line enjoys thousands of agents.  You will pay the same for your cruise whether you book direct or take advantage of the free concierge services the consultant provides.

Cruise consultants are working with all the cruise lines, all the time.  Armed with current sales, promotions and the understanding of your preferences, hopes and dreams, we are able to tailor options and ensure your dream vacation is properly planned.

Cruise Consultants have access to special group rates on thousands of sailings each year that are not advertised to the general public. These group rates are usually offered with extra on board credits not offered by the cruise lines.

Cruise consultants are cruise vacation enthusiasts, we have probably been to the ports you are considering and can give detailed information on the locale, the shopping and excursions that are available.  In many instances, we have completed the cruise line agent training that familiarize us with the ships, the venues, the shows and the ports!

When booking directly with the cruise line over the phone,  you are being booked by a sales representative that is trained on that particular cruise line and since they are trying to sell you a cruise on their cruise line, they cannot offer an unbiased opinion regarding your options.  You will end up calling each cruise line yourself.

A Tradition Honored

Earlier, I wrote about the Marines and Friends Caribbean Cruise that Tony Tijerina and I, together with our wives, host each year. The cruise features the traditional Marine Corps Cake Cutting Ceremony that honors all Marines, past and present.

The cruise truely is for everyone.  We few, we mighty few are joined by veterans of all services. Our friends and family members also join in the celebration!!

In fact, less than half of the small band of merry men and women aboard our cruise vacation actually served in the Marines. All, however have some connection to the military, and enjoy the cruise every year.

The actual ceremony is less than an hour in length. We enjoy  other new traditions throughout the week.
On this cruise we enjoy:

  • Pre-cruise shore party
  • Sail Away party
  • Pool side deck party
  • Pirate Night
  • Our Amazing Race
  • Group dinners
  • Slot Pull
  • Musicals & Comedy Shows
  • Group Excursions

Why do we do it? Because we should, because we can, and most importantly, it is a whole bunch of fun!!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year as we welcome new friends aboard!!

Semper Fidelis

Our first cruise, how it began

After our retirement from the Marines, I was fairly confident I wanted to travel around these United States more, and was not in a hurry to leave the country for awhile.  Understand, I had just spent four years away from home.  Most of my time away was in Africa, and the last year I was only about a four hour drive away.   We visited Texas, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.  We also went through a few boats of varying sizes until we settled on our cruiser and a Jet Ski.

Good friends who were already cruise enthusiasts kept returning from one voyage or another with stories of their life of luxury at sea and eventually I agreed that we should join them.     I managed to convince another friend that he should treat his wife to the same fun we were planning.  Actually, I think we husbands just told the ladies to plan the trip and let us men know when to drive them to the port.

The first cruise was aboard the Norwegian Star, Sailing out of Tampa to Belize, Roatan Bay, Cozumel and Costa Maya.   The ship sailed on Sunday so we drove from Atlanta to Tampa on Saturday and stayed the night near the ship.  We boarded the Star on Sunday afternoon.

The first night at sea, we celebrated clearing the bridge as we hit the open water.  The ladies went to an orientation while the men  remained in the beer garden with our cigars and watched the sun set on over water, no land in sight, a strong breeze kept us cool and I don’t remember going to bed.

The first full day at sea was a lazy as a day could possibly be lazy and it was wonderful.   With the curtains and doors open, it would have been easy to spend the entire morning in bed watching the seas roll by our balcony.   A late shower and early lunch by the pool was enough to set the tone.   I found my friends at the cigar bar/beer garden overlooking the pool, the horizon and the entire ship for that matter.   This refuge at the top of the forward levels would be our gathering place for not just this cruise, but another one a year later with a larger crowd family and friends.

We spent another evening in our perch, enjoying new found friends, the best of cigars and some over prized miller lights.

The next day, we would wake up on Roatan Bay, Honduras.  A island about 50 miles from the mainland.
